Well what an incredible evening that was! Over 700 guests at the biggest business awards in the Midlands and I was fortunate enough to be covering it, with the kind permission of the Shropshire Chamber of Commerce. My main objective was to capture some of the emotion that comes out at an awards event – this is a competitive environment and winning a coveted award can make a significant difference to a business’s trade, as well as providing huge pride, recognition and motivation for its employees. I also wanted to get some shots of the event being set up, guests enjoying themselves and of course the actual awards, although understandably there were plenty of other photographers present so there’s little to be gained from everyone taking the same photos of happy award winners, but I did intervene for one shot (Pipekit and their apprentices) to encourage a bit of air punching!

Held at the International Centre, Telford, Yarringtons Media provided the event backbone, setting up the entire arrangement from the shell of a large, empty conference room. I arrived early in the afternoon and it was surprising how little time there actually was to get myself set up and cover off the preparation shots before guests started to arrive.
The lighting in the conference suite was to be expected but I still got some fantastic shots, using both flash and available light and capturing the emotion ones and also the enjoyment ones (I love how people react to a camera after dinner!). I hope I can cover it again next year, although I’d perhaps stick to flash only I think for the portraits in the main room, even though red and blue lights look great for the mood they can be less flattering for subjects!

We made some useful contacts on the night, so I’m looking forward to working more closely with some of the larger businesses across the county in future.
